WELLINGTON , Nov. 18 -- Criminal assets have topped up New Zealand government coffers by more than 10 million NZ dollars (7.61 million U.S. dollars) in the last two years, the New Zealand Police announced Friday. And almost 43 million NZ dollars of assets seized in police investigations including 14 million NZ dollars seized in one operation this week are still awaiting forfeiture decisions by the courts, said a statement from the Police.Police seized the assets under the Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act, which came into force about two years ago.New Zealand Police Commissioner Peter Marshall said in a statement that the rate of forfeitures was expected to increase significantly ."The legislation is just two years old. We began in the first year with a trickle of cases , but the tap is well and truly turned on now," said Marshall.Every penny of the cash and assets forfeited would have been reinvested in crime , he said."This is effective and powerful crime prevention," Marshall said .At the end of October, the New Zealand Police held restraining orders over an estimated 42.6 million NZ dollars worth of assets, which were yet to be put through the court process."We will continue to improve our application of the legislation and we will continue to target those who profit from criminal activity," he said ."I want to commend that work of the asset recovery units and detectives involved in the investigations, who have undertaken their work in a professional and tenacious way."Around 14 million NZ dollars worth of assets were seized as part of Operation Ark in Auckland on Wednesday, when police arrested 19 people in raids on 45 properties in an investigation into the country's largest suspected Ecstasy dealing ring.Related Topics Articles:
