Panthers vs. Saints: Defensive Preview

Two weeks, six points allowed. No matter the opposition, that’s a feat that warrants praise. It hasn’t been done since the Baltimore Ravens held the Buccaneers and Raiders to that same combined point total in 2006. That Ravens team went on to finish the season with a 13-3 record before bowing out in the divisional round in the playoffs. The Panthers are looking to replicate that regular season success and build on it with a deep playoff run. Granted, the opposition hasn’t been stellar. Both San Francisco and Buffalo will probably find themselves among the worst offenses in the NFL by the time the 2017 season ends. But consider this, the aforementioned Bucs and Raiders teams finished the 2006 season ranked 31st and 32nd respectively in total points scored Brenton Bersin Jersey. The Ravens dominated inferior opposition to start the season and went on to become one of the best defenses in recent history. No team has come close to besting their 201 points allowed in that season. The Panthers defense now faces its toughest test yet, the New Orleans Saints. Through two games, the Saints rank third in the league in total offense, right in line with their usual standing in the Drew Brees Sean Payton era. So how can we expect the Panthers to fare against them? Before we look at the upcoming game, let’s take another look between the Panthers and that 2006 Ravens team. Coincidentally enough, the Ravens faced the eventual 30th best scoring offense in their week three affair against the Browns Carolina Panthers Salute to Service Hoodie. However, the following week, they welcomed Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson and the rest of the high powered Chargers offense to town. That Chargers team finished the 2006 season ranked first in scoring and fourth in total offense. They were completely stymied by the Ravens defense. The 13 points they scored in that game was the only time all season they were held under 20. The Panthers will strive for similar success on Sunday, and here’s how they’ll get thereTake advantage of the Saints injury woes. Both Saints starting tackles are dealing with injuries. Zach Strief is likely still out with an MCL sprain and Terron Armstead is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. It’s a chance for the ageless Julius Peppers and the rest of the front four to feast.Force a turnover or two. The Saints offense is going to move the ball. Forcing a few turnovers is the best way to limit the offense Ryan Delaire Jersey, and Kurt Coleman says he’s looking forward to doing just that. Don’t get beat over the top. The Saints added former Panther Ted Ginn to take the top off defenses. He’s not the most reliable target, but neither is Coby Fleener and we’ve seen him do damage to the Panthers when running vertically. Brees will take some shots. The Panthers can’t let them convert those shots into big chunk plays. Be ready for the check downs. We all know how much Payton and Brees like to get their running backs involved in the passing game. It’s on Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis to patrol the short areas of the field and keep Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara under wraps. The Panthers faced two week offenses in the first two weeks of the season. Now the defense gets a real test before flying up to take on the Patriots in Foxboro. With how they’ve played so far, it’s hard to doubt this unit. The Saints have struggled to convert all their yards into points through two weeks and a trip to Charlotte likely won’t change that.
