Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Early in the season, all Reggie Johnson could do was look on as his Miami-Florida Hurricanes got off to a disappointing 5-4 start. Steve Johnson Elite Jersey . Recovering from offseason knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus, Johnson made his season debut on December 17. Since then the Hurricanes have played stellar basketball, but they still didnt have a signature win on their resume. On Sunday, Miami finally got it. Johnson scored a career-high 27 points to go with 12 rebounds as the Hurricanes shocked No. 7 Duke in overtime, 78-74. "It is big. It is really big man," said the Winston-Salem, North Carolina native Johnson of the win. "My friends and family are here. You know growing up here, I know about Duke. I know about North Carolina. I know about N.C. State. So to come in here and get a win, it is real big time." Austin Rivers and Ryan Kelly both had a chance to tie the game with three- pointers in the final eight seconds of overtime, but both shots were off the mark. Johnson made 1-of-2 from the line with a second left to seal the win for Miami. Kenny Kadji netted 15 points to go with eight boards while Durand Scott added 11 points for the Hurricanes (14-7, 5-3 ACC), who have won four straight games. They are now 9-3 with Johnson in the lineup. "To come in here and play with the kind of poise and defense we did, especially in the first half and overtime, was something that we can be very proud of," said Hurricanes head coach Jim Larranaga. Seth Curry scored 22 while Rivers added 20 for Duke (19-4, 6-2), which has lost two of its last three games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Its 45-game home winning streak was snapped by Florida State last month. The Blue Devils missed all six of their foul shots in the extra session. "I think for 24 minutes we werent really good at all. We had no energy and [Miami] did. I thought they played really well. The last 16 minutes of regulation, I thought we played extremely well and gave ourselves an opportunity to win, but we missed free throws...Then in overtime, we missed all our free throws. You cant do that," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Duke overcame an 16-point deficit in the second half before Currys jumper gave the Blue Devils a 66-65 lead with 2:49 to play in regulation. It was their first lead since 22-21 with 7:52 to play in the opening half. A pair of Johnson baskets sandwiched around Kellys layup gave the Hurricanes a 69-68 advantage with 1:26 to play. Following a Miles Plumlee steal, Rivers drove hard to the basket and drew a foul with 21 seconds left. But he made just 1-of-2 to tie it. The Hurricanes didnt get a shot off on their final possession of regulation. Johnson netted four of the first six points for Miami in overtime as the visitors took a 75-69 lead with 2:11 to play. Rivers and Curry each missed a pair of foul shots during the stretch. A Kelly trey, followed by a Mason Plumlee dunk on Dukes ensuing possession cut the margin to one, 75-74, but the Blue Devils didnt record another point in overtime. DeQuan Jones calmly sank two free throws with 13 seconds left to make it 77-74, but Rivers and Kelly both missed their three-pointers in the closing seconds. The Hurricanes used a 17-2 surge late in the first half to take a 36-24 lead with 3:39 to go. The visitors took a 42-28 advantage into the locker room as Johnson netted 10 points to pace Miami. A 16-2 Duke run was capped by Quinn Cooks short jumper in the paint as the Blue Devils pulled within 55-53 with 8:33 to play. Game Notes It was the Hurricanes first win at Duke. Clint Session Jersey .   Davenport rushed for 499 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games last season, but was deemed expendable after the Steelers inked free agent running back Mewelde Moore and used their first pick in this years draft to select running back Rashard Mendenhall. Santonio Holmes Jersey . What I think that likely means is that in the next day and a half, players like Scott Downs, Jason Frasor, Kevin Gregg, John Buck and even Jose Bautista should keep their bags backed and their cell phones charged. Reggie Wayne Jersey . The 31-year-old midfielder, who has spent his entire career at Liverpool, signed a new "long-term" deal on Thursday. "This is the club I love and is the club I have supported since I was a young boy," Gerrard said. Nick Swisher Jersey . It was a perfect opportunity for two-time NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin to work his magic. Except for the fact that he was on the bench. Nicklas Backstrom scored the tying goal with 42 seconds left in regulation, then added the game-winner at 2:18 of overtime to lift the Capitals to a 5-4 victory Tuesday night.MONTREAL -- With only one veteran skating on an injury-wracked defence, a shutout was the last thing the Montreal Canadiens expected. But the forwards played hard and provided support, Carey Price made 25 saves for his first shutout of the season and Carolina complied by bringing a listless effort to the Bell Centre as Montreal downed the Hurricanes 4-0 on Wednesday night. "The young guys did a great job," Montreal captain Brian Gionta said. "(Alexei) Emelin was all over the place -- lots of hits, lots of blocked shots -- and Freddy (St-Denis) did a great job. He showed a lot of poise and moved the puck well." With Hal Gill (illness), Jaroslav Spacek (upper body) and Andrei Markov (knee) all out, Josh Gorges was the only veteran defenceman in the lineup with 382 career NHL games. Next up was P.K. Subban with 97, Yannick Weber with 67. Raphael Diaz had 18 of experience, Emelin came in with 10 and St-Denis was making his NHL debut after a call up from the AHLs Hamilton Bulldogs. Gill, Spacek and Markov each have more games under their belts than the entire defence corps that was on the ice. "It was a good team performance," Habs coach Jacques Martin said. "The forwards did a good job coming back and the defence kept it simple." Subban scored his first goal of the season while Weber, Michael Cammalleri and Travis Moen also scored for Montreal (8-7-3), which moved above the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Canadiens also moved into a tie for eighth in the Eastern Conference with Ottawa. The same young defence is expected to be on the ice when the Canadiens face the Islanders in New York on Thursday night, possibly with backup Peter Budaj in goal. The Canadiens started the season winning one of their first eight games, but they are 7-2-1 since then. "Were headed in the right direction," Price said. "Were starting to do a lot of little things right and were starting to get more puck luck. "Guys are on the same page. We have new guys stepping in who know what to do right away because the guys are playing the system." The Hurricanes are in a 3-7-0 slide that isnt likely to improve if they continue the disinterested play they brought to Montreal. After two periods, the Canadiens were uup 4-0 and dominating 32-12 in shots. C.C. Sabathia Jersey. Play opened up in the third, when Price finally got some work and had to make a sharp save on a close-range blast from Carolina captain Eric Staal. "We didnt show up, we didnt play and we got what we deserve," said Staal, who had seven shots. "We need a little more fight, a little more jump. "In the third we were buzzing, but by that time Montreal was up 4-0 and they were just sitting there having a good time playing the game, so we got some chances but it didnt matter at that point because the game was over." Staal said the Hurricanes have to find their game, and fast. "No question theres concern. If we keep losing were not going to be in the mix for the playoffs, so weve got to figure this out and get back to winning," he said. "If we dont, the season will be wasted." It was the Hurricanes first visit since winger Erik Cole left the team to sign with Montreal in the off-season. After Price played the puck, Cammalleri one-timed a Tomas Plekanec pass inside Cam Wards post 7:15 into the game to open the scoring. That gave the goaltender his first point of the season. "Not every time that you rim the puck does somebody tap it over to Cammy and he puts it in the back of the net," Price said. Webers change-up shot on a power play got by Cam Ward at 15:15 of the first. The Hurricanes abandoned a wide area in their zone to allow Subban to set up in the slot and snap in his first goal on his 52nd shot of the season 6:13 into the second period. Moen then banked in his sixth with 39 seconds left in the period. It was a big night for the 25-year-old St-Denis, a native of nearby Greenfield Park, Que., who has been working his way slowly up the Canadiens system and finally got into a regular season NHL game. He got 13:42 of ice time, had two shots and was plus-1. St-Denis also took two minor penalties. "I had a lot more ice time than I expected," he said. "I played with Weber and I think we did a good job. I played in four exhibition games and lost them all, so its great to get the win." Notes: Andrei Kostitsyn is also injured for Montreal. ... Joni Pitkanen, stuck on 499 career games played, missed a third game for Carolina with a lower body injury. ' ' '
