GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. Manny Malhotra Jersey . -- Rick Gilsons advice for fellow high school football coaches is simple. "Dont ever worry about the score," the soft-spoken man says matter of factly and without hesitation. "I am not really all that interested in creating a CFL player -- not even particularly interested in creating a player that can go to university. But if I can have players that can be good fathers and good husbands and the kind of people that everyone wants to have on their company or wants to have as their boss, then weve done good stuff." On Monday, NFL Canada named Gilson its youth coach of the year. He beat out more than 400 nominated coaches from across Canada. And while the Grande Prairie Composite principal and sideline boss says the key to good coaching is building good people, not players, he knows he wont get the chance to see what type of men four of his Warriors would have become. Four of Gilsons players died on Oct. 22 when a pickup truck collided with the vehicle they were in. A fifth team member was badly injured and remains in hospital. Faced with the enormous loss right before playoffs, Gilsons team didnt quit. Instead, the members rallied. The Warriors went on to win their league championship before losing in the quarter-finals at provincials. The tragedy and how the team dealt with the aftermath was a driving force behind Gilson receiving the award. "To have the ability to pick up the pieces and carry on is something that not everyone can handle," said community member Darren Robertson in a submission to the selection committee. "Not only did Coach Gilson lead his team back onto the field, he led them all the way to a league championship. He is the rock in a tragic event, and continues to be a role model to young men in a world that is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate." There were a lot of cheers and a lot of tears along the way. Gilson became a focal point, speaking eloquently about the situation the team found itself in -- encapsulating perfectly its sense of grief, but also its determination. And through it all, he says he never lost site of the fact that he was trying to build men, not football players. "You have to believe that there is a reason for all of these things and that you can get through this and that somehow your life will be blessed by it," Gilson said. "When these kids are 25, 35, 45 years old -- at some point in their life -- they are going to have an opportunity to use this experience to help somebody else." His voice cracks when he remembers one poignant phone call he received in the aftermath of the crash. "Maybe it saved me," he says. It was voice mail from a former player five years removed from graduating. Gilson could barely make the young man out through his tears. "He said, Im am really sorry to hear of the four Warriors passing away, but I just called to say that I had my first baby girl yesterday," Gilson recalls. "Those are the things ... He pauses. The tournament is spread out over four courses for the first four rounds, while The Classic Club will host the final round. This is the only five-round event on the PGA Tour schedule and if that isnt enough, it has a penchant for playoffs as well. There have been 12 playoffs since 1982. Charley Hoffman was the latest to need extra holes last year as he two-putted for birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat John Rollins and collect his first PGA Tour title. Fred Couples and David Duval, both with strong histories at this event, are teeing it up for the first time this year this week. Couples has made the cut in 21 of his 22 appearances. The only time he missed the cut was 1999 when he was defending his title. Duval closed with a 59 in 1999 to come from behind and beat Steve Pate for the title. Duval was just the third player to break 60 on the PGA Tour. Some of the celebrities in the field include Jerome Bettis, Michael Bolton, Alice Cooper, Carson Daly, Kenny G, Samuel L. Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cheech Marin, Kevin Nealon and Kelly Slater. The Golf Channel will cover all five rounds this week. EUROPEAN TOUR ABU DHABI GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP, Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - The European Tour begins its desert swing this week with the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. This event is in just its third year. American Chris DiMarco claimed the first title in 06, while Paul Casey picked up the win last year. Casey returns to action this week looking to successfully defend a title for the first time in his tour career. Last year, he fired a final-round 65 to overtake Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez for the crown. DiMarco finished fourth in his title defense last year, but is not in the field this year. Casey will have to deal with five of the top-20 players in thee world this week. Khalif Barnes Jersey. The field also includes Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke, Luke Donald, Niclas Fasth, British Open champ Padraig Harrington, Jimenez, Colin Montgomerie, Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood. The Golf Channel will have coverage of all four days this week. The tour moves to Qatar next week for The Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, where Retief Goosen is expected to defend his title. LPGA TOUR WOMENS WORLD CUP OF GOLF, Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, South Africa - The LPGA opens the 2008 season with the Womens World Cup of Golf, which is in its fourth year. Japan won the first event in 2005, followed by the Swedes in 06 and the Paraguayans last year. Celeste Troche and Julieta Granada combined to post nine-under par as they cruised to a seven-shot win over the United States duo of Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst. The three-day event features a different format each day. The two-player teams play foursomes, four-ball and stroke play over the three days. For a country to qualify, it has to be one of the top nine from each of the LPGA and Ladies European Tours final money list and order of merit. All three days will have tape-delayed coverage on the Golf Channel. After a three-week break, the LPGA opens its regular schedule with the SBS Open at Turtle Bay, where Paula Creamer won last year. CHAMPIONS TOUR MASTERCARD CHAMPIONSHIP AT HUALALAI, Hualalai Golf Course, Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii - Hale Irwin returns Hualalai this week looking to successfully defend his title. Irwin opened the 2007 season with a runaway win, his 45th on the Champions Tour. The win here last year was his first since 2005. The tours all-time wins leader won this title for the first time in 1997 and will be teeing it up at Hualalai for the 13th straight year. In the last seven years, no winner has carded a round in the 70s. When Loren Roberts won in 2006, his winning total of 25-under-par 191 tied the lowest 54- hole score in Champions Tour history.
