Using Ordinary Ingredients to Make Gelato With Your Gelato Maker by Halina Zakowicz

When making gelato with your gelato maker, you do not need expensive or exotic ingredients. Simple items like milk, egg yolks, heavy cream, and sugar are sufficient to get your gelato recipe started.

After these ingredients are mixed together, its time to get creative. Find some fruit, chocolate, or even items like cinnamon and amaretto. Add them to the mixture and let the whole thing marinate overnight in the refrigerator. In the morning, take your gelato concoction and pour it into a gelato maker; Musso, Nemox, and Slimline all make excellent and affordably priced gelato machines and gelato makers. Let the gelato machine churn the mixture; when you hear the motor straining, that will tell you that your gelato is ready to take out and eat.

To give you an idea of just how simple and easy it is to make gelato with your gelato maker, here is a handy strawberry gelato recipe:

Ingredients:
2 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
4 egg yolks
½ cup sugar
½ cup strawberries

Heat the milk and cream in a medium saucepan until foam gathers around the edges of the saucepan. Remove from heat. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until they are foamy. Slowly pour the milk and cream into the eggs and sugar, whisking the mixture constantly. Now return the mixture to the saucepan and place it over medium heat. Stir the gelato until it starts to gel. Filter out any lumps with a finemesh sieve, then cover the mixture with a sheet of wax paper and chill it overnight.

In the morning, take out your gelato and mix it with a spoon. Take the strawberries and puree them in a blender. Add the puree to the gelato, and then pour the mixture into a gelato maker or gelato machine. Freeze the mixture according to the manufacturers instructions.

If you would prefer to limit your cholesterol intake, you may also make gelato with no egg yolks. In this case, cornstarch can be used in the place of egg yolks. The following is a recipe for silkysmooth chocolate gelato:

Ingredients:
3 cups milk
¼ cup sugar
3 tablespoons corn starch
pinch of salt
7 ounces bittersweet chocolate

Heat 2 cups of milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat. In a separate container, whisk together the sugar, corn starch, salt, and ½ cup of milk. Pour this into the warm milk and continue whisking until the mixture is smooth. Keep whisking until the mixture thickens, then remove it from the heat.

Heat up the remaining ½ cup of milk and pour it over the chocolate. Let the chocolate melt, then whisk it until it is smooth. Stir the chocolate milk mixture into the cornstarchmilk mixture and filter through a finemesh sieve. Cool the mixture, stirring constantly to prevent skin from forming. Cover the mixture with wax paper and chill overnight.

The next day, stir the gelato mixture and transfer it into a gelato machine or gelato maker. Let the gelato freeze for a few hours.

Once your gelato has been made and frozen, it is ready to serve and enjoy.
