Skincare Secrets 5 Tips for Battling Summer Breakouts
Skincare Secrets: 5 Tips for Battling Summer Breakouts We wish the only things that broke out over the past few weeks were our summer dresses from our closets. But the recent brutal hot and humid weather has also made our skin way more breakout-prone, so we've rounded up the best ways to treat zits in the summer. Read on! Keep it clean. The most important thing is to keep your pores clean by washing your face twice a day with a cleanser that contains between 0.5 and 2 percent salicylic acid. We recommend Neutrogena Acne Stress Control Power-Cream Wash, or Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser if you have sensitive skin. Massage it in with your fingertips and leave on for a minute before rinsing to let the active ingredients penetrate. Moisturize sparingly. Use an oil-free moisturizer that's labeled noncomedogenic, and only apply it to dry areas (try Eucerin Everyday Protection Face Lotion SPF 30.) If your skin is superoily, skip the moisturizer altogether and apply an oil-free sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection, such as Coppertone Oil-Free Faces SPF 30. Target the problem. Dab a thin layer of cream that contains 2.5 to 4 percent benzoyl peroxide on breakouts and the surrounding skin. Wait for the cream to absorb, then apply an oil-free lotion to dry spots. (Skip this step if your skin is on the oily side). At night, make sure your skin is completely dry before applying any zit cream. Scrub weekly. Gently exfoliating once a week gets rid of the dead skin cells that clog pores (and feels like a mini-facial.) Skin doctors like Clarisonic Classic Sonic Skin Care brush, which sloughs off the top layer without causing any irritation. Cover it up. To mask pimples during the day, lightly blend an oil-free foundation on red areas with a sponge. Follow with an opaque concealer that is slightly paler than your skin to counteract the redness. Apply it using a small, pointed brush, dabbing it directly on the pimple, then blend it around the base with tiny strokes. We like Mark Save the Day Anti-Acne Concealer Stick. --Sophia Panych, Editorial Assistant What's your skin like in the summer?
