WOBURN , Mass., June 19 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man was ordered held without bail Friday in the slayings of his wife, two children and mother-in-law. A Middlesex District Court judge in Woburn, Mass., entered an automatic not guilty plea for Thomas Mortimer IV , 43, of Winchester, and authorized a defense request for a forensic mental health evaluation , the cable news network NECN reported. Mortimer is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of his 41-year-old wife, Laura , 4-year-old son Thomas , 2-year-old daughter Charlotte and 64-year-old mother-in-law Ragna Ellen Stone , who were found dead in their home Wednesday. The Boston Globe reported Mortimer, a sales executive , was taken into custody in a small town just south of the Vermont state line Thursday. Police said he left letters confessing to killing his family , and describing marital and financial problems. Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. said the victims died of "blunt force trauma and sharp objects" but the weapons were not specified.
