BOSTON (AP) - Fred Cusick, the radio and television voice of the Boston Bruins for more than four decades, died Tuesday, his family said. Chris Johnson Nike Jersey . He was 90. Cusicks son, Ted, said his father died at his Barnstable, Mass., home after suffering from cancer. Cusicks death came one day before he was scheduled to be inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Cusick began his career with radio broadcasts of the Bruins in 1952. He moved to television in 1971 and retired from calling games in 1997. Cusick called Bostons Stanley Cup championship in 1970, one of the citys most famous sports moments captured in an iconic photograph of Bobby Orr flying through the air after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. That moment, and the entire season, were among the highlights of Cusicks career, his son said. I believe he (Orr) was the greatest player of all, Cusick wrote in his 2006 memoir, Fred Cusick: Voice Of The Bruins. While broadcasting the Bruins on radio in the mid-1960s, Cusick tried to drum up interest in getting the team on local television. At the time, however, the Bruins were in the cellar of the six-team National Hockey League and he found little interest among TV outlets. I kept telling them that the Bruins had this young player coming along named Orr and he was very good, Cusick recalled. Along with Orr, the Big Bad Bruins as they were known at the time, had stars like Phil Exposit, Johnny Buck and Ken Hog. The teams popularity - and ratings - soared and they also captured the Stanley Cup in 1972. Each goal scored by the Bruins would bring Cusicks trademark shout: Score! The enthusiasm in his voice was genuine, Ted Cusick said. Harry Sinned, a former coach and general manager of the Bruins and now a senior adviser to the teams owner, said Cusick was a huge part of Bruins history and had a major impact on the broadcasting of the sport. He was a pioneer and the way hockey games are broadcast really originated with Fred, Sinden said in a statement. A lot of the camera work that they use was at his suggestion. He had a number of ideas that he brought in and they still use. His memory will certainly live on in the hearts and minds of all Bruins fans, as one cannot recall some of the greatest moments in the history of this club without hearing his voice, said the teams principal owner, Charlie Jacobs. Cusick was a tremendous sports fan, enjoying not only hockey but many other sports, according to his son, who said his father watched last nights New England Patriots game, an exciting 25-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills, with keen interest. In addition to hockey, Cusick also covered numerous other sports during his long career, including the first game played by the then-Boston Patriots in 1960. The son of Irish immigrants, Cusick was born in Boston in 1918 and grew up in the citys Brighton neighborhood. He attended Northeastern University, where he played hockey, football and baseball. He joined the Navy after graduation in 1942 and would remain in the reserves, eventually retiring with the rank of captain. He began his radio career with stations on Cape Cod and in Brockton, where he once interviewed the legendary boxer Rocky Marciano. Cusick was a recipient of the Lester Patrick Award, given by the NHL to persons who make major contributions to the game in the United States. He also was the first American broadcaster to be inducted into the Media Hall of Fame in Toronto. Cusick is survived by his wife, Barbara, his son Ted, and three daughters. OTTAWA (AP) - The Boston Bruins acquired defenseman Tomas Kaberle from Toronto, looking to bolster their blue line as well as their hopes for a Stanley Cup run. Boston sent prospect Joe Colborne and two draft picks to the Maple Leafs on Friday for the three-time All-Star. We felt the time was right with our team, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said. So its a strong message to our team and to our fans that we want to win and we want to be successful. Kaberle made his debut with the Bruins hours after the deal and the Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators 4-2. Besides Colborne, a center taken in the first round in 2008, the Bruins gave up their first-round selection in 2011; they also would send the Maple Leafs a second-round pick in 12 if they re-sign Kaberle or reach the Stanley Cup finals. The Bruins still will have the first-round pick they got from Toronto - likely to be a better pick - in the Phil Kessel deal. The Bruins also traded defenseman Mark Stuart and right wing Blake Wheeler to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for center Rich Peverley and defenseman Boris Valabik. The Bruins lead the Northeast Division and began Friday as the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race with 24 games left in the regular season. Last season the Bruins were knocked out in the second round of the playoffs by Philadelphia, dropping four straight games after taking a 3-0 lead. I looked at the two deals tied together and how they have improved our team, Chiarelli said. We felt that we needed a player like Tomas, a player with good vision, a good skater, can quarterback a power play, has played many, many games in the league. Very smart, heavy player, can skate. ... It was an important piece for us to get, and obviously we had to pay a price. The Bruins also acquired center Chris Kelly from Ottawa earlier this week. The 32-year-old Kaberle had spent his entire career with the Maple Leafs and was the only player remaining from the teams last playoff season in 2004. He is in the final year of a contract that pays him $4.25 million and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer. His 520 points (83 goals and 437 assists) trail only the 762 registered by Borje Salming. His ability to carry the puck and create offense is something Boston needed. We feel Kaberle is definitely one of those guys that can provide us with that, Bruins coach Claude Julien said before the game in Ottawa. We also talked about our power play and needing somebody back there that can be a quarterback and hes someone whos done that for a long time. He covers a couple of important needs that we addressed over the course of the season. With the Feb. 28 trade deadline approaching, it was the third deal the Maple Leafs made in a little over a week. Francois Beauchemin was dealt to Anaheim on Feb. 9 for Joffrey Lupul and a prospect, and Kris Versteeg was sent to Philadelphia on Feb. 14 for first- and third-round picks in 2011.
